Ten people are admitted to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital after sustaining injuries during Thursday’s market protests.

The vendors who were joined by Joan Alobo, the Soroti City Woman MP, and her counterpart, Jonathan Ebwalu for Soroti City West Division protested constant power outages in the market, water disconnection, and the alleged poor leadership.

One of the health workers at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital said that most of the injured persons have minor injuries except for two children Kana Alayo, 10, and Christine Nabwire, 17, who require specialized care for the deep injuries sustained.

Benjamin Otim, one of the vendors in the market said that they have incurred losses, especially from the section of fresh foods for months. Otim says that as much as individual vendors have paid for power, they cannot access it because the main line to the market has been disconnected.

Moses Ojangole, another vendor said that the standby generator that was installed in the market is grounded and the market leadership has kept a deaf ear.

Both the market leadership and the Soroti City authorities declined to comment on the matter when our reporter contacted them.

Since Soroti Central Market was opened, the vendors have continued to bicker with city authorities over space allocation, garbage management, and allegations of extortion.
