Two prisoners in Lyantonde district have Wednesday morning died in a motor accident as they heading for labour, according to CP Frank Baine, the Prisons’ spokesperson.
Baine says the incident happened at around 8am involving 10 prisoners and 2 Kabula Prison staff leaving 7 prisoners injured.
“Unfortunately two prisoners died on the spot,” Baine says.
The deceased have been identified as Isheme Willy charged with cattle theft and Kaggwa John charged with theft and their bodies were taken to Lyantonde government hospital mortuary.
Meanwhile two prisoners and one staff warder were seriously injured. Five inmates survived with minor injuries and are all currently admitted at Lyantonde Health Centre IV.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the officer in charge of Kabula Prison did not adhere to administrative instructions by the Commissioner General of Prisons in 2017 regarding the transportation of prisoners,” he explained.
Uganda prisons nows says that their inspection team has been dispatched and their findings will inform the next course of action.
