Police in Kaabong district are hunting for suspected warriors who ambushed and shot dead two people in Moriutit village, Sidok Sub County.
It is reported that the deceased identified as Daniel Owana and Ojapis were on Friday night riding a motorcycle registration number UFG 996P while returning to Kaabong from a cultural event in Napak district. The suspected warriors laid an ambush and gunned them down as they approached the Moruitit community camp.
James Mutaire, the Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigations at Kaabong Central Police Station said that the suspected Dodoth warriors stopped the cyclists along the crossroad and ordered them to park the motorcycle at the roadside before dragging them into the bush that was about 10 meters away.
Mutaire observed that the warriors removed the sheets locally known as Nakatuko, a traditional sheet for Karamojong and searched them before shooting them dead. Mutaire said his officers who visited the scene of the crime found the two bodies lying in a pool of blood with a bedsheet beside them and the helmet.
He said the suspects later disappeared to an unknown destination and the motorcycle that was recovered was parked in the middle of the road. The deceased have been taken to Kaabong Hospital for postmortem before being handed over to the relatives for burial.
The eighth edition of the Karamoja cultural event is ongoing in Napak district, a function that has attracted hundreds of people from each district across all the nine districts and other participants from Turkana in Kenya and Toposa from South Sudan.
The Elders have been engaged in dialogues to draw the possible solutions to end hunger and insecurity which are the major barriers to Karamoja’s development.
A week-long event is ending today Saturday where elders are expected to announce their resolutions before government officials for further action.
