The Uganda People’s Defence Forces Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) in Kisoro district has burnt 150 kilograms of immature Nile Perch.

The immature fish, valued at 7 Million Shillings was impounded on Thursday from Kanaba checkpoint hidden in a sack and loaded on a motorcycle.  It was destroyed on Friday at  Kisoro district headquarters.

Robert Tukamuhaabwa, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner said that security was hunting for the cyclist who was carrying the immature fish. According to Tukamuhaabwa, the suspect is believed to have been transported the fish from Masaka.

He said that security personnel will continue to crack down on dealers who fail to abide by the directives.

Kisoro district majorly depends on fish from Lakes Victoria and Edward since fish farming in the district is very low.

In July 2023,  authorities led by the then Resident District Commissioner, Hajji Shafiq Sekandi Ssengoba, suspended fishing activities in Lake Mutanda and Lake Kayumbu until further notice following cases of poor fishing practices among registered fishermen.

The fishermen were found using substandard fishing nets, while others resorted to traditional methods, which compromised the sustainability of the fish population.
