A family, which lost an 11-year-old girl over the weekend to a landslide in Bumbo Sub County in Namisindwa district has cried out to the government for financial support. Afusa Wachemba, a resident of Buwundu village in Buwamzala parish, Bumbo Sub County, succumbed to injuries caused by a rolling stone resulting from landslides that struck Kamusayi and Buwazala parishes.
During a visit on Monday morning by Julie Namara, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner of Namisindwa, her father Simon Mutwalibu, expressed his desire to relocate to a safer place. Mutwalibu noted that although his house wasn’t washed away, it has developed cracks everywhere, posing a threat to him and his family.
He revealed that serious cracks have also emerged in the entire village and with the ongoing heavy rains, the situation remains precarious. Stressing the urgency of the matter, Mutwalibu stated that if the government provides financial assistance, he and others in the area are willing to vacate and purchase land in a safer area for resettlement.
Namara encouraged residents to relocate to nearby safe places while awaiting the government’s response, given the continued rainfall. John Musila, the Bubulo East Constituency Member of Parliament in Namisindwa district, reported the issue to the Ministry of Disaster and urged people still residing in disaster-prone areas to move to safer locations while awaiting government intervention.
