The Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) on Lake George has arrested three people on allegations of using illegal fishing gear at Kasenyi fishing landing site in Lake Katwe Sub-County, Kasese district.

The suspects have been identified as Bright Prosper, a resident of Rubirizi district, Joseph Byamukama 26, and Bogere Muzidalufa 21, both residents of Kasenyi.

According to the UPDF Operations Officer Fisheries Protection Unit on Lake George, Staff Sgt. John Behumbiza, the suspects were arrested while practicing illegal fishing and using illegal fishing gear like unrecommended boats and nets.

Behumbiza added the suspects were arrested while in a breeding zone saying they will be produced before courts of law.

In September, the FPU burnt over 800 illegal fishing gear and boats on Lake George.  The items included 110 illegal boats, 340 pieces of monofilament fishing nets, 260 fishing nets, and 240 Metallic fishing baskets.

This was during an operation at Mahyoro and Kasaka landing sites in Kitagwenda and Rubirizi districts respectively.

The Government through the UPDF fisheries protection unit has put a stern warning about illegal fishing gear in Uganda but the local community has often refused to comply.
