On Tuesday, May 28, students from the Presidential Initiative on Skilling the Girl and Boy Child (PISGBC) began showcasing their products at Luzira Skilling Centre, located within the Luzira Prison Complex. The event featured products from various disciplines, including embroidery, hairdressing, bakery, tailoring, knitting, leather design, and shoemaking.

Mr. Moses Kizito Nsubuga, the Kampala Regional Coordinator, represented the Chief Guest, Hajjat Hadijah Uzeiye Namyalo, Head of the ONC office. He praised President Yoweri Museveni for offering free vocational skills training to vulnerable youth in Kampala and Uganda, helping uplift their livelihoods. Nsubuga encouraged the students to utilize their new skills to improve their futures, emphasizing self-reliance and perseverance. “Don’t give up; this is just the beginning. Start small and grow big,” he advised.

Dr. Faith Mirembe Katana, Special Presidential Assistant on Education and Skilling and Head of PISGBC, defended the State House budget, highlighting its extensive responsibilities, including skilling centers, poverty alleviation initiatives, and other activities. She urged politicians not to misguide the public about the budget, stressing its necessity for various programs. Dr. Katana also advised students to prioritize product quality and service standards to compete globally.

Ms. Joyce Athieno, Administrator of Luzira Skilling Centre, reported that 566 students are ready for exams from the current intake, with 6,382 out of 8,103 registered youth having completed and graduated since January 2018. Many graduates have created jobs for themselves and others. Athieno thanked President Museveni, the Commissioner General of Prisons Dr. Johnson Byabashaija, and other stakeholders for their support. She noted the introduction of additional programs in ideology, patriotism, and sports, which have significantly benefited the students.

During the event, beneficiaries shared testimonials about how the Luzira Skilling Centre transformed their lives. Julius Mugisha, a former resident of Kinawataka ghetto, now runs a successful shoemaking workshop.

Sylvia Nabukeera expressed gratitude to President Museveni and encouraged others to acquire skills for self-development. Ronald Musoke, who learned weaving despite a disability, also praised the initiative for restoring his hope and sense of belonging.

The function featured cultural performances by students, showcasing their cultural engagement alongside their vocational training. The ceremony was attended by officials from the ONC-NRM, security officers, and local political leaders.
