Parliament has paid tribute to the Late Pope Francis who died on Easter Monday while parliament was in a short Easter recess.

As the House chaired by Annita Among resumed sitting on Tuesday, the Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja moved a motion in honor of His Holiness Pope Francis.

The motion was unanimously second by the Parliament regardless of the political divide.

Nabbanja said Pope Francis touched many minds and hearts and that he sets personal connection with peoples and individuals with close attention to those in difficulty,

“Confronted with the present day inequalities and raging wars, with their inhuman horrors, and the innumerable deaths and destruction, Pope Francis persistently raised his voice imploring peace and calling for reason and honest negotiation” said Nabbanja, who last met Pope Francis in July 2023 at the Vatican.

She said Francis used his papacy to push for action against climate change. “He always proclaimed that environmental degradation is a moral issue spurred by greed”  she said.

The leader of the opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi says the late Pope Francis legacy will be remembered not only in the Catholic Church but also around the world by those who cherish truth, Justice.

“Pope Francis was a bridge builder who crossed the boundaries of faith, politics and ideology. He reached out to Muslims, Jews and people with no faith,” said Ssenyonyi.

Buyaga West County MP, Bernabas Tinkasimire was among the Ugandans that met Pope Francis last year.  He narrated his experiences with Pope Francis. 

Tinkasimire says the late pope has special attributes in the world.

State Minister for Finance Henry Musasizi hailed Pope Francis for his commitment to peace and justice.

Former Leader of the Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga said when Pope Francis visited Uganda in 2015, his message touched on three things; remembrance of the sacrifice of the Uganda Martyrs, fidelity to all manner of occasions, and it also urged us to always remain close to God in prayer.
