The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has officially directed all Regional Assistants to the Mufti and District Kadhis across the country to attend this year’s Uganda Muslim Martyrs Day Commemorations, scheduled for June 9 and 10, 2025.
The directive, issued by Sheikh Imran Abdunoor Ssali, Secretary for Religious Affairs, emphasizes the mandatory nature of participation, citing the importance of unity, reverence for the legacy of Muslim martyrs, and national religious identity.
The communication follows a Management Committee resolution made on May 27, 2025, and a ruling by His Eminence, the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje.
“This year’s commemoration runs under the theme: ‘Honoring Our Legacy, Shaping Our Future’ and will be held at Masjid Noor, the National Muslim Martyrs Site in Namugongo, Wakiso Muslim District,” the circular reads in part.
Key activities will include a Martyrs Trail—a tour of significant historical Muslim sites—on June 9, followed by the main commemoration ceremony on June 10.
The President of the Republic of Uganda is expected to grace the event as Guest of Honor, while the Mufti will preside as Chief Celebrant.
Quoting the Qur’an (3:136), the directive invokes the spiritual significance of the occasion: “And never think of those killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision.”
Sheikh Imran underlined the seriousness of the directive, stating that any failure to attend without prior written permission would be treated as insubordination and a breach of duty.
“This is a national call to reflect on our legacy and contribute to Muslim and national development—without any semblance of blasphemy or violation of Islamic theological principles,” he added.
He also commended the continued dedication of Muslim leaders to the cause of unity and heritage, stating: “As usual, your enthusiasm and dedication to the Muslim Ummah’s unity and legacy are what truly inspires us all.”
The Uganda Muslim Martyrs Day is commemorated annually to honor early Muslims who were persecuted and killed for their faith, particularly during the Buganda Kingdom’s 19th-century religious upheavals.
“Sheikhs, together let us make #MuslimMartyrsDay2025 a monumental success, Insha’Allah!” Sheikh Imran concluded, praying for Allah’s blessings on the commemoration and reaffirming the UMSC’s commitment to strengthening the Ummah under the Mufti’s leadership.
