Retired Brigadier General Emmanuel Rwashande has declared his intention to contest in the upcoming elections, aiming to “liberate” Lwemiyaga from what he describes as long-standing tyranny.

He made the declaration on Monday from the NRM Electoral Commission offices where he had gone to pick express of interest forms.

Lwemiyaga in Ssembabule District is currently represented by controversial legislator, Theodore Ssekikubo.

Rwashande, a prominent figure in Ugandan politics, says he is committed to addressing the grievances of the people of Lwemiyaga, an area he believes has been marginalized and mismanaged.

“Lwemiyaga has been in tyranny for so many years,” he stated, highlighting the urgency of his campaign. His agenda, he explained, revolves around implementing government programs and revitalizing the political landscape to foster development akin to other areas in Uganda.

The general’s rhetoric included a strong critique of the current political environment, accusing Ssekikubo of failing to implement essential government initiatives.

“They have removed all things, removed them from their party,” he said, pointing to a 25-year tenure of Ssekikubo as a source of frustration among constituents.

Rwashande’s campaign promises to “win hearts and minds” and work closely with the government to ensure that Lwemiyaga benefits from national development programs.

The announcement comes at a time when the country is gearing up for significant electoral activities, including the election of village flag bearers by youth, older persons, and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) is conducting primaries nationwide, setting the stage for a competitive political season.

Political observers have noted the general’s use of military terminology, such as “liberate,” which resonates with his background and the historical context of Uganda’s political transitions. However, some have questioned the feasibility of his promises, given the complex political dynamics at play.

As the election date approaches, Gen. Rwashande’s campaign is expected to intensify, with a focus on mobilizing support and addressing the specific needs of Lwemiyaga’s residents.

The outcome of these elections could have significant implications for the region’s development and its place within Uganda’s broader political landscape.
