Police have moved to clarify speculation surrounding the brutal murder of Nakiwolo Sophia, a 28-year-old mobile money and bank agent operator, who was stabbed to death on June 28, 2025, at her workplace along Nkrumah Road.
Social media platforms have been rife with claims attributing the attack to the notorious Kifeesi criminal gang, but authorities say the incident is unrelated to the group’s activities.
According to SSP P. Onyango, Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, the Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala received a report at around 7:20 PM on June 28, 2025, of an unidentified woman lying in a pool of blood on the veranda of Freedom House, in front of Shop No. K-618, located in Nkrumah Village, Civic Center Parish, Kampala Central Division.
The victim was later identified as Nakiwolo Sophia, who operated a mobile money and banking agency at the shop. Conflicting accounts have emerged regarding the incident.
Nickson Elizah, a co-worker, claimed that two unidentified assailants attacked Sophia while she was balancing the day’s transactions, stabbing her and injuring him in the leg before fleeing with his mobile phone.
However, two security guards near the scene contradicted this, stating they heard screams from the shop but saw no one fleeing. Instead, they observed Elizah pushing the bleeding Sophia out of the shop before returning inside.
Police secured the crime scene and recovered a knife with fresh blood stains, believed to be the murder weapon. Sophia’s body was taken to City Mortuary for a postmortem. Two suspects, Nickson Elizah and Ssemakula Abdu, have been arrested.
Elizah, who was assaulted by an angry mob before police intervention, is under guard at Mulago Hospital for treatment. SSP Onyango emphasized that the murder is not connected to recent daytime robberies by youths in the area, dismissing social media claims linking it to Kifeesi.
A case of murder by stabbing has been registered at Nkrumah Road Police Station, and investigations continue to uncover the motive and circumstances of the attack.
Police have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information and to allow the investigation to proceed.
