The National Unity Platform (NUP) Presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi, has vowed to free all political prisoners if elected President in 2026. Addressing a rally at Sir Tito Winyi Playground in Hoima City on Wednesday evening, Kyagulanyi said many Ugandans are languishing in government prisons after being unlawfully arrested under the current regime.
He pledged that immediately after assuming power, all political prisoners would be released and provided with justice. He named some of the political prisoners as Dr. Kiiza Besigye, Eddy Mutwe, Waisswa Mufumbiro, and Young Bobi, among others. Kyagulanyi further promised that no civilian would be tried in military courts for offenses committed.
He accused President Yoweri Museveni of maintaining a dictatorship through oppressive means and pledged to restore democracy and the rule of law.
Kyagulanyi also promised transformative developments, including improvements in road networks, electricity connectivity, water coverage, and the provision of free education with meals for all students.
Addressing the people of Bunyoro, he urged them to vote for him to ensure that they benefit from the oil and gas resources discovered in the region. Kyagulanyi criticized the current government for failing to implement mechanisms for local communities to gain from the Albertine oil sector. “I want to ensure that the people of Bunyoro and the Kingdom of Bunyoro get a bigger share of the oil revenue,” he said.
Kyagulanyi also condemned the forceful and brutal evictions of locals from their land by high-ranking officials, vowing that his government would protect property rights. He is expected to continue his campaign trail in Bunyoro with a rally scheduled for Masindi town today.
