Officials from the Jinja diocese have unveiled plans for the burial of their fallen bishop, Rt. Rev. Charles Wamika.
Wamika breathed his last yesterday evening at the Rubaga hospital in Kampala after battling multiple illnesses.
The diocesan leadership held a series meetings throughout today, where a tentative program for the send off of Wamika.
Diocesan chancellor Fr. Gerald Muto says that their program kicks off tomorrow with a mass at Rubaga cathedral, Kampala where Archbishop Paul Ssemwogerere will be the main celebrant.
Muto says they will later proceed for a vigil and Mass in Tororo diocese, where Wamika previously served as the assistant bishop for over 17 years. They will later proceed for a mass and night vigil in Wamika’s birth place of Budaka parish on Sunday, where his family, friends, among others congregants will be accorded the opportunity of public viewing.
He says that they will later travel back to Jinja diocesan headquarters on Monday for a mass, night vigil and public viewing.
This he says will climax into a final mass and send off of Wamika, who will laid to rest inside St. Joseph’s cathedral.
Muto explained that Wamika was diagnosed with prostate cancer about four years ago and he immediately started on several medications todate. He added that Wamika has been equally battling several illnesses ranging from Kidney failure, diabetes and high blood pressure, among others.
The chancellor says that through support from president Yoweri Museveni, Wamika sought specialized treatment from India in July, 2025 for a period of one month, which partly stabilized his situation. Muto says that however, his situation worsened early this month, prompting them to seek specialized treatment at Nsambya hospital, but their Intensive Care Unit was full at the time. This he says prompted them to seek relief from Rubaga hospital from where was pronounced dead yesterday at 3:58PM.
Wamika died at 72 years of age after serving as bishop of Jinja for over 15 years.
