Domestic violence

Police in Busia district are struggling to keep up with the rising number of domestic violence cases.

It’s reported that Busia Central police station currently registers cases between 45 to 50 every month. The crime has been on the rise since the beginning of October. The Police said that they used to handle fewer than 30 cases.

Peter Mugabi, the Busia district Police Commander, said while addressing local leaders in the Bukedi South region community security sensitization meeting held at Masafu Town Council on Thursday, that they are registering many cases of domestic violence.

He attributes the increase in cases to negligence and failure by men to play their roles in the families. DPC Mugabi said that they have resorted to counselling of couples and other family members who are in violent relationships.

The DPC appealed to village chairpersons to join hands and handle family matters in their areas of jurisdiction.

Juliet Taaka, a resident, says that men have abandoned their responsibilities to women. They spend most of their time in bars and lodges, and when a wife tries to ask, the man begins to beat them.

Loyce Wafula, the village chairperson, says that they forward to the police cases of domestic violence.

She appealed to the police to regulate the operation of bars and gambling places because they are the key cause of violence in families.

Kapchemuti Ayetula,  the Bukedi Region Police Commander, said that they are going to conduct an operation to curtail the bars and gambling places like sports betting points and video halls that operate past the expected ending time.

He said that they have noticed that bars, video halls, and betting points are havens for criminals.
