The electorates of Nyamwamba Division in Kasese Municipality are expressing urgent concern over recurring floods, inadequate markets, and poor road infrastructure. Flooding, particularly during the rainy season, has become a major concern for both urban and rural communities living adjacent to the district’s major rivers.

This persistent flooding results in loss of lives, destruction of hectares of crops, and displacement of residents, severely impacting their livelihoods. Nyamwamba Division has been especially hard-hit, as the river flows directly through the area, exacerbating flooding issues. Despite these challenges, residents feel that the government has not taken sufficient or effective measures to address the problem.

They are hopeful that the upcoming leadership will prioritize flood management and infrastructure development to improve safety and living conditions for all residents. During the ongoing NRM campaign, residents are calling for urgent and deliberate government action to permanently control flooding in the area. They are also advocating for improved road infrastructure and better market facilities to support local livelihoods.

Kyondo Cell LC1 Chairperson, Emmanuel Katuramu, voiced his frustrations over worsening living conditions and inadequate infrastructure in the area. He highlighted the persistent flooding of River Nyamwamba, which over the years has led to significant property loss and displacement of people. Katuramu emphasized that political candidates must clearly outline their plans and solutions to prevent future flooding.

Jockim Muthanuka, who lost his semi-permanent house to the 2020 flooding, urged that commitments made by politicians over the past few years are just election gimmicks. He demanded that those seeking to lead genuinely understand the plight of households and the business community living and working adjacent to the Nyamwamba River. He emphasized the need for real action and sustainable solutions to prevent disasters in the district.

Racheal Kamusiime, a vendor at Majengo Market, mentioned that they lack proper market spaces. She noted that, due to the absence of designated areas, vendors are forced to use space along the Kasese–Fort Portal highway, which is prone to accidents and presents safety concerns. She said authorities need to provide adequate and secure market facilities for vendors.

He emphasized the need for improved drainage and infrastructure to address these environmental challenges. Charles urged all candidates in Kasese to advocate for better roads outside the town centre, noting that improved transportation infrastructure aids quick access to markets.

Kambale Ferigo, Member of Parliament for Kasese Municipality and aspiring for re-election, assured residents that government interventions to control flooding are underway. He announced that over 360 billion Ugandan shillings have been secured for desilting River Nyamwamba to prevent future floods.
