Police investigation tape

The police in East Kyoga and other security agencies in Amuria District have launched an investigation into a violent incident that occurred on Thursday night during clashes between two factions of the National Resistance Movement.

The confrontations left one person dead and three others critically injured following the night shooting at the Apasi trading center in Ogongora Sub-county on Thursday night. The deceased has been identified as Saidi Eteru, a resident of Orungo, Aridi, reported to be a supporter of NRM flag bearer Teddy Anyuk.

‎Eteru sustained gunshot injuries during the clashes that erupted between rival political supporters and died on spot.

‎Amuria Resident District Commissioner Paul Eseru confirmed that Eteru died from bullet wounds, while three other individuals are currently receiving treatment for serious injuries at an undisclosed hospital.

‎Eseru stated that an investigation has commenced, with various security agencies deployed in the district to ascertain the circumstances that led to the shooting.

‎Preliminary findings indicate that the violence followed a prolonged confrontation between supporters of General Jeje Odongo, the incumbent independent candidate for Orungo County, and those backing Teddy Anyuk, the NRM flag bearer. Tensions reportedly escalated when music systems from both political camps were played simultaneously at the trading center, leading to heated verbal exchanges that eventually turned into physical fights.

Residents reported that police were alerted to respond to the situation but delayed in responding.  As tensions rose, General Jeje Odongo’s security detail, consisting of soldiers, intervened. During the standoff, gunfire erupted, resulting in both fatal and non-fatal injuries.

‎By the time of filing this report, police had not issued an official statement regarding the incident, but investigations are ongoing with multiple security agencies involved.
