The Diocese of Lango is set to host the St Janani Luwum Memorial Public Lectures on February 14, 2026, at the defunct Canon Lawrence Primary Teachers College, now the All Saints University campus.

The Reverend Captain Patrick Benson Ogwang, Director of Mission and Evangelism, Diocese of Lango, announced that the event aims to inspire young people to emulate the life of St Janani Luwum, a Ugandan Anglican martyr.

“The memorial public lecturers will be held at Canon Lawrence PTC, which is now the All Saints University campus, to inspire the young people to live the life of St Janani Luwum,” Ogwang said.

The guest speakers for the event will be RT Rev. Ashley Null, the Anglican Bishop in charge of North Africa, and Ambassador Dr Olara Otunu. He added that after the event, they will all head to Wii Gweng village in Mucwini Sub-county, Kitgum district, where the main celebration will be held two days later.

The Right Reverend Wilson Kitara, the Bishop of the Diocese of Kitgum, revealed that there will be representation from the Diocese of Kitgum as the host of St Janani Luwum Memorial Day. He noted that the St Janani Luwum Memorial Public Lectures promise to be an inspiring event, and the Diocese of Lango is encouraging all to attend.

Okot P’Bitek, the Vice chairperson of the Local Organising Committee, said the Diocese of Lango and West Lango will animate this year’s 49th St Janani Luwum Day. He added that there will be another public memorial lecture at Wii gweng, where the celebrations will take place. P’Bitek said they are yet to confirm the date of the Public Memorial Lecture, but tentatively propose February 13th, 2026.

He said the event is expected to draw a large crowd, especially young people, and will provide an opportunity for them to learn about the life and legacy of St Janani Luwum.

Janani Luwum was a Ugandan Anglican Archbishop and martyr who stood up against Idi Amin’s oppressive regime. As the Archbishop of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Boga-Zaire, he advocates for human rights. He was executed on February 16, 1977, now a public holiday in Uganda to honour his legacy of integrity and faith.
