Police in Fort Portal City are investigating a fatal shooting incident that left a police constable dead following a standoff with a private security guard along Kibogo Road.

Vincent Twesige, the Rwenzori West Police spokesperson, said officers received information at around 5:30 PM on Friday that a man was firing bullets inside a gated building.

Twesige said a team of officers led by the Fort Portal City District Police Commander responded to the scene, which was identified as the offices of GT Group Security Group, a private security company.

According to Twesige, a police constable identified as Duncan Bainomugisha, who was among the responding officers, was shot dead by the security guard who had been firing inside the premises.

The suspected shooter was identified as Paul Mutazindwa, an employee of GT Expert Security Group. Police later received reinforcement from the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), and at around 10:30 PM, Mutazindwa was put out of action.

According to Twesige, Preliminary police investigations indicate that Mutazindwa was allegedly dissatisfied with his work.

He adds Police have since commenced investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the shooting.

Twesige revealed that two people have also been arrested to assist police with inquiries, although their identities have not yet been disclosed, and CCTV footage was retrieved to aid investigations.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to URN say the shooting started earlier in the afternoon. Ismael Kamara, a boda boda rider, said that residents began hearing gunshots at around 3:00 PM and decided to flee the area for safety.

He said he was informed that the guard was allegedly demanding his salary from the company.

Another resident, Keneth Tumwesigye, said the security guard reportedly had misunderstandings with his colleagues, which may have escalated into the fatal shooting.
