Adjumani Police have arrested a woman following the death of her co-wife during a violent confrontation at a family meeting. The suspect, Jane Baatio of Egge Village, Ajugopi Parish, Dzaipi Sub-county, was detained on Sunday after her co-wife, Zakia Ahmad, died from injuries sustained in the altercation.

Police report that the incident occurred on the night of February 14, 2026, during a meeting convened by Maiku Ahmad, husband to both women, and chaired by their father-in-law, Swaibu Kanaa, to resolve ongoing domestic disputes.

“The meeting escalated after both women refused to follow guidance and became unruly. While leaving the compound, a physical altercation erupted. Baatio overpowered Zakia and squeezed her neck, causing suffocation,” said North West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, Collins Asea.

Zakia Ahmad was rushed to Nyumanzi Health Center III, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Georgina Yumaru, LC1 Vice Chairperson of Egge Village, said the women had a history of disagreements, but the community did not expect the conflict to turn deadly.

According to the 2024 Annual Police Crime Report, 157 homicide cases were recorded in the West Nile Region, underscoring concerns over rising violent crime.
