Police in the East Kyoga Region are investigating a case of attempted murder following a shooting incident in Soroti City. The incident occurred on April 26, 2026, in Agip Cell, Soroti East Division.
According to police, the suspect, Joseph Olakitari, a 32-year-old security guard attached to TAN International Company, allegedly discharged a firearm during a confrontation with a businessman, Abudu Mwanika.
Preliminary findings indicate that Mwanika had gone to a Pepsi depot along the Soroti–Mbale Road to retrieve a battery from his vehicle, which had been impounded over an outstanding debt of about 600,000 shillings.
A disagreement reportedly broke out between the two during which Mwanika allegedly advanced towards the guard armed with a hammer.Police say the guard responded by firing one round from a pump-action rifle. Mwanika sustained injuries to his left arm, while an 18-year-old bystander, Mary Atim, was hit by pellets on her upper back.
The East Kyoga Regional Police Commander, Ibrahim Saiga, confirmed that officers responded swiftly, arrested the suspect, and recovered the firearm along with ammunition. Both victims were rushed to the hospital and are currently receiving treatment. Investigations into the incident are ongoing. URN
