A fatal road accident in Sironko District has claimed the life of a five-year-old girl. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon at Bundege Village along the Mbale–Bulambuli Highway. Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, identified the victim as Khalayi Hilda, a resident of Bundege Village.
He said the child was knocked dead by a white Mitsubishi Fuso truck, registration number UBQ 671D, driven by Deo Mupanda, a resident of Namanyonyi Village in Mbale City’s Northern Division. According to Taitika, the child, who was in the company of other people, abruptly crossed the road and was hit by the vehicle, dying instantly. Her body was taken to Mbale City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
The driver has been detained at Sironko Central Police Station to assist with investigations, while the vehicle has been impounded and parked at the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) traffic checkpoint in Mbale City pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles.
Police say inquiries into the accident are ongoing. Taitika urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children, especially when walking along busy highways, to prevent similar tragedies.
