Ambassador Adonia Ayebare, Chair of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), held a productive meeting with Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), upon his arrival in Bonn.

The meeting sets the stage for the upcoming Subsidiary Bodies meetings, scheduled for June 16-26, 2025, which are seen as a critical stepping stone toward the success of the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, in November 2025.

The discussions underscored the urgency of advancing global climate action, building on the momentum from COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Ambassador Ayebare and Stiell emphasized the importance of making tangible progress during the Bonn sessions to ensure robust outcomes at COP30.

Key priorities include refining the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance, enhancing transparency in climate commitments, and preparing the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) due in 2025.

“We are at a pivotal moment in global climate negotiations,” Ayebare stated, reflecting on the meeting.

“Our focus in Bonn is to lay the groundwork for COP30 by fostering cooperation and ensuring that scientific and technological advancements guide our climate strategies.”

Stiell echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need for cohesive action to support developing nations through increased climate finance and technology transfers, areas critical to achieving the Paris Agreement’s goals.

The Bonn Climate Change Conference will see record participation, with delegates from governments, civil society, and the private sector converging to tackle pressing issues such as carbon credit frameworks under Article 6, adaptation indicators, and gender-responsive climate policies.

Stiell, appointed UNFCCC Executive Secretary in 2022, has been a vocal advocate for equitable climate solutions, drawing from his experience as Grenada’s former Minister for Climate Resilience.

His leadership has been instrumental in securing commitments like the loss-and-damage fund at COP27, which has mobilized $702 million to date.

As the world looks toward COP30 in Brazil’s Amazon region, the Bonn meetings are expected to set a collaborative tone, addressing complex challenges like the alignment of national climate plans with the 1.5°C target.

Ambassador Ayebare’s role as SBSTA Chair will be pivotal in steering discussions on scientific and technological innovations to support global climate resilience.

The outcomes of the Bonn sessions will be closely watched as a barometer for the ambition and cooperation needed to make COP30 a success.

With Brazil’s commitment to ocean and forest protection already shaping the COP30 agenda, the international community is poised to deliver transformative climate action in 2025.
