The National Unity Platform (NUP) has reaffirmed plans to nominate its presidential candidate, Hon. Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert, widely known as Bobi Wine, on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, and to immediately hold two public rallies in Kampala despite what it calls “intimidation and double standards” by the authorities.

In a formal letter dated September 17 and addressed to the Inspector General of Police, NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya notified the police and the Electoral Commission of the party’s post-nomination program.

The letter, stamped as received by both offices on September 18, indicates that Bobi Wine will first be presented to the Electoral Commission for nomination in the morning, before addressing supporters at two separate rallies.

According to the schedule, the first rally will be held at Katwe Grounds in Makindye Division from 12:00pm to 4:00pm, followed by a second rally at Kaala Playground in Nateete, Rubaga Division from 4:30pm to 6:00pm. Rubongoya attached payment receipts confirming the booking of both venues and pledged that the gatherings will be “conducted peacefully and in accordance with the law.”

The declaration comes even as the Electoral Commission has not yet cleared Kyagulanyi’s nomination, citing ongoing verification of the thousands of signatures required from across the country to endorse his candidacy. NUP maintains that it has submitted more than enough endorsements and expects final confirmation before nomination day.

The party also raised concern over potential interference by state agencies, noting that President Yoweri Museveni and the ruling NRM plan to hold their own post-nomination event at Kololo. “We hope the police will not act criminally and seek to interfere with our activities,” NUP said in a statement shared on social media.

The Electoral Commission has yet to comment on the rival rallies, but Tuesday is shaping up to be one of the most politically charged moments of the 2026 election cycle as Uganda’s main opposition leader seeks a second bid for the presidency.
