Police in Busia District are investigating a case in which a father allegedly beat his own son to death. The suspect, 54-year-old Bwire Siiro of Mundindi ‘B’ village, Busime Sub-County, is accused of fatally assaulting his 30-year-old son, Joseph Ochieng.

Bwire Siiro told our reporter that a dispute arose on Wednesday after Ochieng began slashing his maize garden with a panga. When Siiro tried to stop him, the son reportedly turned violent. The suspect claimed his son had a history of violent behavior and was often armed with a panga.

It is reported that the deceased died shortly after arriving at Lumino Police Station, and the cause of death is yet to be determined. Abdul Nassar Wandera Kisuyi, Busia Assistant RDC, confirmed the arrest and condemned the father’s actions, calling them an act of mob justice. He attributes the son’s behavior to drug addiction and noted that many youths addicted to opium become a burden to their families.

Wandera urged youths to avoid drugs and take advantage of government programs such as Emyooga and the Parish Development Model (PDM).

Clement Oguttu, Mayor of Lumino Town Council, said police detained the father after discovering that Ochieng had died while under their watch.

Siiro is currently held at Busia Central Police Station as investigations continue.
