Ramadhan Misubaho, a mortuary attendant at Kasese HCIII, has appealed to the health authorities for the upgrade of the current mortuary facility, citing increasing number of dead bodies brought in and inadequate infrastructure.

Misubaho has served at the facility for over 28 years, despite lacking formal qualifications, attributes his expertise to the teachings of his father, a former mortuary attendant in Mubende.

Despite his experience, he highlights the challenges faced due to limited space and lack of proper body handling equipment’s.

On average, he receives between four to eight bodies a week. However, during times when the mortuary receives more than ten bodies in a week, the small facility becomes overwhelmed and increases difficulty in managing the workload.

He explains that some of the bodies remain at the mortuary for extended periods, further straining the already limited capacity.  He emphasizes the urgent need for a larger and better equipped mortuary  to met the rising demand and improve his service.

Businge Miriam, the officer in-charge of the health center, confirmed the inadequacies of the mortuary, emphasizing the insufficient space and lack of medical supplies necessary for the treatment of bodies.

She says that the facility receives bodies from all over the district and its their wish that they get a facility can at least handle 30 bodies at a go.

Mupango Rabson, the Deputy Mayor of Kasese Municipality, acknowledged the dire state of the mortuary noting that developing this facility is part of a five-year development plan.

He advocates for the district health department to take over the management of this mortuary to improve on its services.
