The Ethiopian community in Kampala, on Monday, joined hundreds of Ugandans and other African diaspora members in a vibrant solidarity march to commemorate Africa Day.

This, with the intention of marking the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the African Union (AU), originally established as the Organization for African Unity (OAU) in 1963.

The colorful procession, organized in Kampala, saw participants donned in traditional attire, waving flags, and carrying banners celebrating African unity and heritage.

The Ethiopian community, known for its strong cultural presence in Uganda, contributed to the festivities with traditional music, dance, and displays of Ethiopia’s rich history, showcasing the shared aspirations of African nations.

Africa Day, celebrated annually on May 25, honors the historic formation of the OAU in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where 32 African nations came together to promote unity, decolonization, and development.

The AU, its successor, continues to champion these values, fostering cooperation among its 54 member states.

Speaking at the event, a representative of the Ethiopian community, Amina Tesfaye, emphasized the significance of the day.

“Africa Day reminds us of our shared struggles and dreams. As Ethiopians living in Uganda, we are proud to join our brothers and sisters to celebrate our continent’s resilience and unity,” she said.

The march culminated in a cultural festival at a local community center, featuring performances, speeches, and discussions on the AU’s role in addressing contemporary challenges like climate change, peace, and economic integration.

Local leaders and AU representatives in attendance reaffirmed their commitment to a prosperous and united Africa.

The event underscored the strong ties between Uganda and its Ethiopian residents, highlighting the power of collective identity in building a brighter future for the continent.
