Residents of five sub-counties in Namisindwa have a reason to celebrate as they now have access to free clean gravity flow water valued at 200 million Shillings. The beneficiaries are in Bumbo town council, Bumbo Sub County, Magale town council, Bukiabi sub-county, and Bumwoni Sub counties in Namisindwa district. The water was sourced from underground and is distributed to people’s homes using solar energy.
The project was donated by the Sana Project, a non-governmental organization operating in the Teso region. The initiative was championed by John Musila, the Bubulo East Constituency Member of Parliament in Namisindwa district. During a gathering at Bumbo town council over the weekend, Musila emphasized the dire need for this project. He noted that his constituents had been forced to drink water from unreliable and contaminated sources, leading to health issues such as typhoid and diarrhea.
Additionally, he said, women and children had to trek over five kilometers to access clean water for drinking and household use. Jackson Wakwaika, the local council V chairperson of Namisindwa district, expressed his satisfaction with the project. He highlighted the financial burden placed on residents by the national water and sewerage corporation, where a single unit cost 6,000 Shillings, making clean water unaffordable for many. He urged the community to use this precious resource responsibly to avoid future scarcity.
Suzan Matenyo and Jennifer Sekere, both residents of Bumbo town council expressed their joy at the prospect of receiving free clean water, which had previously been unavailable. They called upon their area members of Parliament to extend this clean water supply to other sub-counties within the constituency to benefit more residents.
