Four people have died following a raid on Kasese Central Police Station and Rughendabara police station in Kasese district early this morning. Heavy sporadic gunfire erupted in the town around 5:00 AM, bringing business activities to a standstill.

According to the police report GEF:028/2025, at around 5:00 AM, unknown assailants armed with guns, pangas, and catapults attacked Kasese Main Police barracks, firing numerous bullets into the air. Four male attackers, dressed in civilian clothes and gumboots and armed with pangas, were shot dead. Five other attackers have been arrested.

Godfrey Kiwede of the Red Cross said some injured suspects and victims have been rushed to different health facilities for first aid, while the total number of casualties is still being ascertained. Authorities confirmed that the attackers forced their way into Kasese Central Police Station but were repelled by the Uganda Police Force and Uganda People’s Defense Forces-UPDF. Heavy security deployment remains across Kasese town.

Meanwhile, reports indicate a separate attack at Kakuka UPDF barracks in Bughendera County, Bundibugyo district, where assailants attempted to set fire to some UPDF structures. These attacks echo past violent incidents in the region. In 2016, an assault on the Kidodo police post in Kasese shortly after the general elections left over six people dead, including a police officer whose firearm was stolen.

In 2014, more than 30 people were killed in Bundibugyo when approximately 80 youths armed with machetes, spears, and arrows attacked Bundibugyo town, moved to Kikyo and Kirumya police posts, and later engaged the army at Kanyamirima Barracks.
