Annet Anita Among, the Speaker of Parliament, has criticized recent protests by Generation Z demonstrators in Kampala’s Central Business District, labeling them as self-seeking individuals who disrespect Ugandan values and the Parliament.
“These protesters are trying to destroy the country by demanding my resignation. Resign and go where? I still have one term to serve as the president confirmed. Once I complete my term, I will pass the speakership to my brother Thomas,” stated Among.
Among made these remarks on Sunday while addressing the congregation at a thanksgiving mass for Mzee Daudi Bangirana and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa at St. Karoli Lwanga Catholic Parish in Bitereko, Mitooma district.
After over a month of online mobilization, Gen Z protestors took to the streets of Kampala on July 23, protesting against ongoing corruption allegations in the Ugandan Parliament, including those involving Speaker Among.
The Speaker also mentioned that demonstrators are upset because of the Parliament’s cooperation with the President and their lack of conflict with the Executive. She pledged continued support for the Executive amid the ongoing unrest.
Furthermore, Among emphasized that Members of Parliament are not accountable officers and argued that demonstrators should not blame Parliament for the theft of public funds, as such activities do not occur there.
Authorities have often accused protestors of pursuing personal ambitions, with some currently being accused of supporting homosexuality.
In his national address on July 14, President Museveni warned against those he described as “wrong elements” who are attempting to create chaos in Uganda.
“While we, the wealth creators, are busy building Uganda, some elements, including some from the opposition working with foreigners, are fomenting chaos through riots, illegal demonstrations, and inconsiderate processions,” Museveni stressed.
“These people are unfair and should check themselves, or we will have no choice but to intervene. Do not bring chaos and disrupt people’s livelihoods.”
