Heavy rains have destroyed temporary structures hosting internally displaced persons in Muhokya camp Kasese district.
Up to 1,500 people were temporarily resettled in Muhokya sub-county after a series of floods and landslides displaced them from their homes in December 2020. They have been seeking answers on why the process for their relocation and resettlement has stalled even after a presidential directive.
Rehema Aryema, the camp chairperson said life is unbearable after more than 20 makeshift structures accommodating families were destroyed by the storm.
Aryema says that the Prime Minister’s office pledged to resettle them, in vain.
Agnes Kabugo one of the other affected persons said water had entered from the bottom of the tents and some tents were blown away by the wind.
She asked the government to prioritize resettling them in a much better place.
The State Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Godfrey Kabyanga said that the government is committed to ensuring that the IDPs are permanently settled.
