As the political season festivity approaches—marked by rallies, events, and increased public activity—leaders in Katakwi District are urging parents to take a proactive role in guiding and disciplining their children during the holidays. During the Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Priscilla Comprehensive Girls’ SS in Katakwi over the weekend, the District Inspector of Schools, John Bosco Okiror, stressed the importance of monitoring children’s movements, especially with numerous public events taking place.

His appeal follows a recent incident in which a Primary Five pupil was injured after venturing too close to a loud music event. Katakwi LCV Chairperson, Geoffrey Omolo—also a teacher by profession—echoed the call, urging parents to protect their children from risky behaviors, including early sexual activity, which could expose them to HIV/AIDS.

As he campaigns to retain his seat, Omolo encouraged families to focus on constructive activities instead of getting carried away by the noisy excitement of campaign festivities. Teddy Adeko, the headteacher of Priscilla Comprehensive Girls’ SS, called on parents to work collaboratively with schools in instilling discipline. She emphasized the importance of helping children cultivate positive habits during the holiday, including prayer, noting that discipline should not be left to school administrators alone.

Usuk County MP hopeful, Augustine Otuko, emphasized that academic success requires combined efforts from parents, teachers, and learners. He urged parents to take responsibility for disciplining their children rather than leaving the burden solely to teachers. Otuko added that education is not only about buildings and infrastructure but also about personal development and future opportunities.

Several speakers at the AGM underscored the importance of timely payment of school fees to avoid disruptions in service delivery, including food supplies and other essential school operations. During the meeting, the school announced the acquisition of four plots of land worth Shs32 million, earmarked for the construction of staff houses. Looking ahead, the school plans to build a boys’ dormitory, complete the ongoing construction of a girls’ dormitory, and install CCTV cameras to enhance security. Priscilla Comprehensive Girls SS, which enrolls both boys and girls, employs over 32 teachers and has a total population of 1,277 learners from Senior One to Senior Five. The school has continued to post strong academic results, with three students attaining Division One in 2020, seven in 2022, eleven in 2023, and another eleven scoring As in 2024.
