Peter Banura, the Kikuube District LC5 Chairperson who died in a road accident along the Hoima–Fort Portal road, will be laid to rest on Thursday at his ancestral home in Rumiina cell, Buhimba Town Council.

Banura, 51, perished in the accident on Saturday evening around 8:20 p.m. at Butyamba Cell, Kikuube Town Council, leaving two others critically injured.

The victims, whose identities are yet to be confirmed, were rushed to health facilities in Kikuube District and Hoima City.

Preliminary police reports indicate that Banura had parked his official Toyota Hilux (UG3400084) by the roadside and was speaking to a group of people when a speeding Toyota Hiace taxi (UBQ 853E) traveling from Fort Portal to Hoima rammed into them, causing critical injuries.

Banura was rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Police attributed the accident to speeding and reckless driving, and the taxi driver remains at large. His body was later transferred to Mengo Hospital for a postmortem.

The burial program begins on Tuesday at 9 a.m. with a funeral service at Christ the King Church in Kampala, after which the body will be taken to the home of Major Gen. Matayo Kyaligonza in Kitiko, Kampala.

On Wednesday morning, the body will leave Kampala for Kikuube, where a special district council session will be held at 10 a.m. to pay tribute to the late LC5 Chairperson.

A mass and vigil will be held at 6 p.m. at his ancestral home in Rumiina cell. Burial will take place on Thursday, starting at midday.

The program has been confirmed by Balaam Barugahara, State Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development in charge of children and youth affairs, who is a member of the burial organizing committee.

Banura, the son of Uganda’s Ambassador to Burundi, Major Gen. Matayo Kyaligonza, was first elected LC5 Chairperson for Kikuube in 2021 and was recently re-elected in the local government elections, polling 37,455 votes to defeat Phenekansi Timanyire of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who garnered 6,230 votes.
