Kampala International University (KIU) has reaffirmed its academic prowess by securing its position as the premier private university in Uganda and the East African region. This, according to the July 2025 Webometrics World University Rankings.

The institution also holds its rank as Uganda’s second-best university, trailing only Makerere University, which has now claimed the top spot in East Africa.

The latest Webometrics report highlights a notable shift in the regional academic landscape, with Makerere University rising to become East Africa’s leading university. Despite this, KIU’s consistent performance underscores its commitment to excellence in education, research, and digital engagement.

Prof. Muhammed Ngoma, KIU’s Vice-Chancellor, expressed pride in the achievement, stating, “This sustained recognition reflects the hard work of our faculty, staff, and students. Our focus on advanced digital infrastructure, impactful research, and a strong online presence ensures that KIU’s academic contributions resonate globally.”

The Webometrics Ranking, conducted by the Cybermetrics Lab under Spain’s Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), evaluates universities based on three key metrics: visibility (external web links and domain impact), transparency (citations of top researchers via Google Scholar), and excellence (highly cited research papers from 2019–2023, per Scopus/Scimago data).

KIU’s impressive performance in these areas highlights its robust digital footprint and the global reach of its scholarly work.As KIU approaches its 25th Anniversary, to be celebrated during the 31st Graduation Ceremony on July 26, 2025, this ranking milestone underscores a legacy of innovation and academic leadership.

The university’s ongoing success cements its role as a hub for higher education in East Africa, drawing students and researchers from across the continent.

By leveraging technology in education and research, KIU is poised to drive the region’s digital transformation and shape the next generation of professionals and innovators.
