The measles outbreak in Karamoja has been contained, health officials have confirmed.
Dr. James Lemukol, the Moroto District Health Officer, says only nine cases are still active out of the 14 last week.
He stated that the drop in cases was due to heightened surveillance in the district, coupled with the mass vaccination through a door-to-door campaign.
Dr. Lemukol said that in some sub-counties, immunization coverage has reached 100% while in others, it’s still ongoing.
Dr. Charles Nuwaga of Napak also confirmed a decline in the number of new cases due to vaccination and increased surveillance. He did not provide the number of active cases in Napak.
The Ministry of Health declared measles outbreaks in the month of October (Amudat), November (Nakapiripirit and Napak), and December (Abim and Moroto).
And recently, the government procured and dispatched emergency vaccines to all the districts of Karamoja, where immunization is currently underway.
In Kotido, the vaccines were distributed on Saturday to all health centres, from where they will be administered under the routine immunization arrangement.
