Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson, has stated that they are investigating all suspects involved in an incident resulting in the loss of life of the late Serunjogi Ismael.

According to Owoyesigyire, at around 6 pm on Sunday, a report was received from Sebwana Yusuf alleging that a group of bodaboda riders chased his son to Gaba, where they beat him, accusing him of stealing a bodaboda.

“We are conducting an investigation; evidence at the crime scene has been collected, and efforts are underway to trace the suspects who participated in this act of mob justice,” he emphasized.

However, the police noted that they cannot currently confirm whether the victim was involved in the bodaboda theft, as it is nowhere to be found.

In the 2022 Annual Crime Report, the police noted a total of 953 cases of murder by mob action, with victims mainly suspected of offenses such as theft, robbery, murder, and witchcraft.

Furthermore, police highlighted that a total of 978 individuals were lynched to death, with 943 males, 25 females, and 10 juveniles, with the Albertine region registering the highest number of mob justice cases.

Owoyesigyire cautioned the public about the illegality of mob justice in the country, stating that all those involved in this crime will be apprehended by the force to answer for their actions.
