President Yoweri Museveni has called on cultural institutions to prioritize promoting and preserving African culture, highlighting the importance of traditional sites like palaces and burial grounds.
Speaking through Vice President Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo during the 58th coronation anniversary of Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu (OBR) cultural leader Charles Wesley Mumbere in Kasese on Saturday, Museveni reaffirmed his government’s commitment to supporting the protection of these culturally significant sites.
He emphasized that such heritage sites are valuable tools for tourism and educational purposes, ensuring that African culture remains intact. Museveni also tasked the OBR cultural institution with leading the alleviation of poverty within the kingdom.
He noted that the government has already provided essential infrastructure, such as improved road networks and security, which should translate into job creation and economic growth for the local communities.
The president commended Omusinga Mumbere for his efforts to rebrand the Rwenzururu Kingdom and for promoting unity, tolerance, and coexistence among its people.
In his address, Omusinga Mumbere encouraged his subjects to invest in extensive agriculture as a sustainable way to improve household incomes. He urged the government to facilitate market access to ensure better prices for agricultural produce.
Local leaders, including Kasese Municipality Member of Parliament Ferigo Kambale and District LCV Chairperson Eliphazi Muhindi, took the opportunity to remind the government of its pending pledges to the cultural institutions and the district.
They highlighted the need for the upgrade of Kasese airfield and the revitalization of Kilembe Mines, which are crucial for the region’s economic development.
