President Yoweri Museveni will on Friday hold an engagement with journalists including news managers and political talk show hosts from leading media outlets in the country.

The interaction, according to a notice by the Presidential Press Unit, will take place at 11am at Nakasero State Lodge.

It will also be relayed live on public broadcaster, UBC, and other media platforms.

The development is an acknowledgement by President Museveni of the role of the media in strengthening democracy and development of the country.

The President has previously saluted the courage and determination of media practitioners who on a daily go the extra time, sometimes at great personal risks, to keep society well informed.

However, he has also on several occasions rebuked irresponsible media practices. The President might use the day to remind journalists to reflect on the need to embrace the best professional standards and practices, especially in this era of new media characterised by fake news.

During the interaction, Journalists and the President are expected to engage on the current social, political and economic affairs in the country in relation to how information is disseminated by the media.

The media could as well remind government of its commitment to freedom of the press that many say is waning every other day in Uganda, as well as the need to ensure the protection of the rights and privileges of journalists in the lawful performance of their professional duties.
