In a significant step toward fostering environmental stewardship and cultural preservation, Kin Kariisa, CEO of Next Media, met with the Katikkiro (Prime Minister) of the Buganda Kingdom, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, to discuss collaborative initiatives aimed at protecting the environment and amplifying Buganda’s rich cultural heritage.
The meeting, held Thursday afternoon, marked a pivotal moment in aligning media innovation with community-focused goals.
The discussions centered on two key areas: environmental conservation through Next Media’s Taasa Obutonde campaign and the Buganda Kingdom’s ongoing efforts, as well as the creation of authentic, engaging content to celebrate Buganda’s stories and traditions through Next Media’s forthcoming Content Creator Hub.
A Shared Commitment to Environmental Responsibility
At the heart of the meeting was a mutual recognition of the urgent need to address environmental challenges, particularly in light of recent unpredictable weather patterns in Uganda.
Kariisa and Mayiga explored how Next Media’s Taasa Obutonde campaign, which translates to “Protect the Environment,” could synergize with the Buganda Kingdom’s initiatives to promote sustainable practices.

“We both believe this is a responsibility we can’t ignore,” Kariisa shared in a post on X following the meeting.
The Taasa Obutonde campaign, launched by Next Media, seeks to raise awareness about environmental conservation through media outreach, community engagement, and actionable initiatives.
The Buganda Kingdom, known for its influential role in mobilizing communities, has similarly prioritized environmental protection, including tree-planting drives and advocacy for sustainable land use.
The leaders agreed to pool resources and expertise to amplify these efforts, with plans to engage communities across Buganda in activities such as reforestation, waste management, and climate resilience programs.
This partnership is expected to leverage Next Media’s vast media platforms, including NBS Television and Sanyuka TV, to broadcast educational content and inspire collective action.
Celebrating Buganda’s Culture Through Innovative Storytelling
The second pillar of the collaboration focuses on cultural preservation and storytelling. Kariisa introduced Next Media’s upcoming Content Creator Hub, a platform designed to empower young creators to produce high-quality, authentic content.
The Hub will serve as a creative space to showcase Buganda’s history, traditions, and contemporary contributions to Ugandan society.
“We explored how our Content Creator Hub can help bring Buganda’s rich stories and culture to life,” Kariisa noted.

The initiative aligns with the Buganda Kingdom’s mission to preserve its heritage while engaging younger generations.
Mayiga, a vocal advocate for cultural pride, expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the importance of authentic representation in media.
Both parties committed to dedicating personnel and resources to produce content that celebrates Buganda’s legacy.
This could include documentaries, short films, and social media campaigns highlighting iconic aspects of Buganda culture, such as the Ganda language, traditional ceremonies like the Kabaka’s coronation, and the Kingdom’s role in modern governance.

The Content Creator Hub is expected to provide training and tools to young content creators, fostering a new generation of storytellers rooted in cultural authenticity.
A Nod to Innovation and Community Upliftment
During the meeting, Mayiga commended Next Media’s investment in technology and innovation, particularly its role as a media house that goes beyond broadcasting to drive societal transformation.

“It was honestly great to hear his affection towards our efforts,” Kariisa shared, highlighting Mayiga’s appreciation for Next Media’s mission of “Informing to Transform.”
Next Media, one of Uganda’s leading media conglomerates, has built a reputation for delivering impactful journalism and entertainment while championing social causes.
Its platforms reach millions of Ugandans, making it a powerful partner for the Buganda Kingdom, which commands significant cultural and social influence.
The partnership underscores a shared vision of uplifting communities through education, cultural pride, and environmental stewardship.
By combining Next Media’s technological prowess with the Buganda Kingdom’s deep community ties, the collaboration is poised to create lasting impact.
Looking Ahead
The agreement between Next Media and the Buganda Kingdom signals a new chapter in public-private partnerships in Uganda.

As the Taasa Obutonde campaign gains momentum and the Content Creator Hub prepares to launch, both entities are expected to roll out joint initiatives in the coming months.
These efforts will likely include community events, media campaigns, and content premieres that resonate with audiences across Uganda and beyond.
For the Buganda Kingdom, the partnership reinforces its role as a forward-thinking institution that adapts to modern challenges while preserving its heritage.
For Next Media, it solidifies its position as a media leader committed to meaningful storytelling and social good.

As Kariisa and Mayiga move forward, their collaboration serves as a model for how media and cultural institutions can work together to address pressing issues like climate change and cultural erosion, all while inspiring and empowering communities.
