The opposition political party, the National Unity Platform (NUP) flagbearer in the Omoro County by-election, Tolit Simon Akecha, is dead.

The news of his passing has been confirmed by Omoro County MP, Andrew Ojok Oulanyah.

“It is a dark day in Omoro. We have lost one of our gallant sons and former MP, Hon. Simon Toolit Akecha. Hon. Toolit was the MP for Omoro County between 2006 & 2011 and was a candidate in the recent by-elections,” wrote Oulanyah on Twitter on Monday.

Details regarding circumstances surrounding his death are still scanty.

He was the party flagbearer in May 26, 2022 Omoro County MP by elections, a position that fell vacant in February after the demise of Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah who was area member of parliament.

The by-election was won by National Resistance Movement (NRM) party candidate Andrew Ojok Oulanyah who garnered 14,224 of the total votes cast. Tolit who came second only managed 1,633 votes.

Prior to contesting in last year’s by-election, Toliit, a former member of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Party had in 2006 stood against Oulanyah. After he didn’t win, he went to court to challenge Oulanyah’s victory.
