A 27-year-old man has been injured after allegedly attacking Kigoro Police Station in Kasese District, authorities have confirmed. Police identified the suspect as Jowas Bwambale, who reportedly attempted to forcibly enter the station while armed with a panga.

According to the Rwenzori East Police Spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushiime, officers on duty responded to what they described as an imminent threat by firing shots, injuring the suspect in the process.

Tumushiime said the man’s motive remains unclear and police are still investigating his intentions at the time of the attack.

The suspect sustained gunshot wounds to his left hand and is currently receiving treatment under police guard. Tumushiime added that once Bwambale is discharged from the hospital, he will be formally charged in court.

The incident comes against the backdrop of heightened security concerns in the Rwenzori sub-region, following coordinated attacks on police installations late last year. On November 1, security forces repelled simultaneous assaults carried out by armed assailants across both Rwenzori West and Rwenzori East police regions.

In Rwenzori West, the attacks targeted Bunyangabu District, Bundibugyo District, specifically Kakhuuka Parish in Sindila Sub-county, as well as Fort Portal City, including areas around Nyakasura School, Canon Apollo Core Primary Teachers’ College, and parts of Kabarole District.

In Rwenzori East, the same group of attackers struck Kasese Police Barracks and Rugendabara Police Station in Kasese District. Security agencies say several assailants were neutralised during the operations, while others were arrested. Some police officers also sustained injuries during the confrontations.

Investigations into the latest Kigoro incident are ongoing, as authorities continue to monitor and respond to security threats in the region.
