Nakaseke Woman Member of Parliament, Sarah Najjuma has vowed to block additional funding for the ongoing construction works on Gomero-Migani-Kagongi-Buwana road due to shoddy works.
The community 33-km road project worth over Shs2 billion is constructed by Greystone Investments Limited.
According to Najjuma, residents have for sometime raised concerns over what they referred to as substandard works on the road, asking her to intervene. It is behind this background that she embarked on a fact-finding tour of the said project.
The lawmaker told this news website that what she saw was appalling.
“What I have seen on ground is not worth the Shs 2 billion. A lot is either lacking or not worked on well. The swamps have not been filled well, the drainage and offshoots have not been done to the expectation,” says the lawmaker.
“There is no marram at all in the Kagongi to Buwana section. Who does such,” she asked.
Najjuma has however revealed that she is surprised that with such shoddy work, the contractor is seeking more funding, something she has vowed to block until the already provided Shs 2 billion is put to proper use.
“The Contractor is raising an issue that he is exhausted with the Shs 2 billion and that he needs to be added more money in order to complete the project, something I do not agree with,” noted the MP.
Legislators and other political leaders are encouraged to monitor and evaluate government funded programs in their areas to avoid misuse of the funds.
The MPs are also mandated to hold consultative meetings with their constituents, update them on the activities of Parliament and government policies, and gather their views and concerns on issues, which affect their livelihood.
