Police in Kagadi are investigating the mob killing of two men suspected of attempting to break into a drug shop. The victims, David Kato, 26, and Benon Tumusiime, 28, were beaten to death by an angry mob on March 7, 2026, at Twerire Trading Centre in Galiboleka Sub-county.

According to Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine South Police Public Relations Officer, residents attacked the two men after catching them trying to break into a drug shop at around 4 a.m. Police visited the scene, documented the incident, and conducted a postmortem before handing the bodies to the families for burial. Hakiza warned the public against taking the law into their own hands. He urged residents to report suspected criminals to authorities so they face legal action, rather than mob justice.

Residents said they attacked the suspects at Twerire Trading Centre in Bugarama Parish after catching them in the act. The victims were buried on Sunday—Kato David at his parents’ home in Twerire Village, and Benon Tumusiime at his relatives’ home in Mukasojo Village.

Fred Katarikuka, Chairperson of Bugarama A, said Benon had lived in Kagadi Town Council after being chased from his home area and had long been suspected of theft. “The community had been wary of him, but mob justice is never the solution,” he said.

A relative, Katusabe Adela, said Benon reportedly started stealing at a young age after moving from Kabuga in Muhooro Sub-county, highlighting the deeper social issues surrounding the case. Vito Turyakira, the GISO of Garibileke Sub-county, said he alerted police after learning that residents had already attacked the suspects. He condemned the mob action and said security agencies are investigating, warning that those involved could face legal consequences. URN
