Police in Lira City, West Division, are investigating a suspected murder after a decomposing body of an unidentified adult male was discovered in a school pit latrine. The body was found on Tuesday afternoon at Savior Secondary School in Kakoge “B” Cell, Ojwina Ward. The discovery was made by the school director, Johnson Adupa, who said the body appeared to have been dumped at the school on an unknown date.
Preliminary police findings indicate that the school premises are neither fenced nor guarded, raising suspicion that the deceased may have been killed elsewhere and later disposed of in the latrine. Investigators noted that the latrine manhole cover had been removed, the body placed inside, and the cover replaced.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed that a case of suspected murder has been opened, although no suspects have been identified so far. He said the body was retrieved from the pit latrine by the Fire Brigade and taken to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination to establish the cause of death.
Okema called on the public to cooperate with the police to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
Meanwhile, police are also investigating another suspected murder case in Apac District, where the body of a seven-month-old baby was discovered half-buried with one foot exposed. The incident was reported in Aboo Cell, Bardong Ward, Arocha Division, Apac Municipality. It is alleged that on January 24, shortly after the elections, the child—identified as Ezra Awanyi—left home with his mother, Namboze Robinah, and a babysitter identified only as Monica, and never returned. The child’s father, Mathew Owino, reportedly tried to trace them through relatives without success.
The baby’s body was later discovered on Tuesday by children who had gone fishing and hunting in the area. They alerted a resident, Maxwell Okuta, who informed the LC I Chairperson. The matter was reported to the Apac Central Police Station, where investigations were launched.
Okema said police are still searching for the child’s mother and the babysitter as inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death continue. He added that further details will be communicated as the investigations progress.
