Qatar and Uganda have discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation on issues before the United Nations.

Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, held talks with Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Adonia Ayebare, at Qatar’s Permanent Mission in New York on Thursday.

The two officials reviewed cooperation between Qatar and Uganda and exchanged views on a number of current issues on the UN agenda.

The meeting comes amid growing diplomatic and economic engagement between the two countries. In November 2025, Qatar announced plans to open its first resident embassy in Kampala, after previously handling relations with Uganda on a non-resident basis from Nairobi. Uganda already maintains a resident embassy in Doha.

Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said the move was a sign of growing bilateral relations and noted that Uganda’s exports to Qatar had increased from about $20 million to $34 million over the previous decade, while Qatar’s exports to Uganda rose from $17 million to $26 million.

The two sides identified agro-processing, tourism, manufacturing, minerals, oil and gas, and technology transfer as potential areas for deeper cooperation.

Economic ties have also been strengthened through the Uganda-Qatar Business Forum. The second edition, held in Doha in October 2025, brought together government officials, investors and private-sector leaders to explore trade, investment and tourism opportunities.

In June 2026, President Yoweri Museveni also held discussions with Qatari investors on potential partnerships in food processing, energy, logistics and manufacturing.

The latest New York meeting therefore adds a multilateral dimension to the expanding Uganda-Qatar relationship, as the two countries continue to engage on bilateral cooperation and issues on the UN agenda.
