Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan, emphasized that formal complaints about police officers should be directed to the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) rather than being aired on social media. He stated that allegations made on social media would be viewed as attempts to damage the reputation of officers who are lawfully carrying out their duties.

On Sunday, social media, particularly X, was flooded with claims of torture by Superintendent Ntabu Joel, who is responsible for investigations at the Central Police Station. He is accused of torturing protesters arrested during last month’s March to Parliament demonstrations.

During the weekly security briefing on Monday, Owoyesigyire assured the public that the police are taking these allegations seriously and are committed to thoroughly investigating them.

“However, it is important to clarify that investigations will not be conducted based on social media posts. We urge those who feel aggrieved to formally report to the Professional Standards Unit and the CID at Kibuli for a comprehensive investigation,” he emphasized.

The police also noted that the lobby of the police station, where the suspects were taken, is equipped with CCTV cameras, and footage can be accessed for investigations.

It remains unclear whether the public will follow this advice, as some individuals, particularly those who voiced concerns, have expressed a lack of trust in the police force.
