Three members of the same family have died in a tragic road accident involving a passenger bus and a fuel truck in Luwero Town along the Kampala-Gulu highway.
The crash occurred at around 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday near the Weighbridge Station in Luwero Town Council. It involved a bus heading to Kampala from Gulu, registration number SSD 251Z, and a truck, registration number UAV 190Q, traveling in the opposite direction.
The deceased, Moses Nyago, his wife, and their child, were residents of Kiyenje Zone in Luwero Town. Reports indicate that the family had hitched a ride on the fuel truck while returning home after shopping for household essentials in Luwero.
An eyewitness, Moses Ssemakula, said the accident occurred when the bus driver attempted to overtake more than five vehicles at high speed and rammed into the oncoming truck. According to Ssemakula, the mother and child died instantly, while the father succumbed to his injuries en route to Luwero Hospital.
Police, with assistance from the Red Cross, responded swiftly to the scene and evacuated the injured to nearby health facilities.
Luwero District Police Commander (DPC) Brighton Ahimbisamukama confirmed that three people had died and at least 20 others were injured. He said ten passengers sustained serious injuries, while the other ten were treated for minor wounds.
The bodies of the deceased were transferred to the Luwero Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination. By midnight, police were still working to clear the wreckage from the road to restore traffic flow.
The latest incident comes barely a week after a separate accident in Kiryandongo District, where two buses and other vehicles collided, claiming 46 lives and leaving dozens injured.
