The Kapelebyong District Local Government has earmarked over UGX 415 million for the construction and renovation of education infrastructure in the 2025/2026 financial year, in a bid to address classroom shortages in primary schools across the district. On February 6, 2026, district authorities officially handed over project sites to Sovia Construction Limited, the contractors tasked with implementing the education projects. The interventions are expected to ease congestion in schools that have been operating with as few as six classrooms, forcing learners to study under trees.

The projects are funded through a development grant of UGX 327,758,122 and a maintenance grant of UGX 87,910,762. Under the development grant, the district will construct a two-classroom block with an office and store at Acinga Primary School for UGX 103,165,335. Two-classroom blocks will also be constructed at Alaso Primary School (UGX 89,175,538), Alupe Primary School (UGX 89,175,538), and Odukul Primary School (UGX 46,241,710).

Meanwhile, renovation and completion works will be carried out at Apopong Primary School at UGX 42,719,418 and Kobuin Acowa Primary School at UGX 45,191,286. The Acting District Education Officer, Denis Okengo, commended the Government of Uganda for the timely release of funds, noting that the selected schools have long struggled with limited classroom space.

He urged the contractors to deliver quality work and adhere strictly to project timelines.“I also call upon the contractors to maintain a good working relationship with community members. It is only fair that communities are given opportunities to provide labour and materials, so that they also benefit economically,” Okengo said. The Assistant Resident District Commissioner, Augustine Ojoomi, pledged close supervision of the projects to prevent shoddy work and ensure value for money.

Kapelebyong District Communications Officer, Emmanuel Opio, said the completion of the projects will significantly improve the learning environment and strengthen the district’s academic competitiveness nationally.Construction works are expected to take between two and three months to complete.
