A Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) counter-terrorism unit neutralized two armed terrorists in Munyonyo, an upscale suburb of Kampala, early this morning.
The intelligence-led operation, executed at dawn, thwarted a potential threat to the upcoming Martyrs Day celebrations, authorities confirmed.
According to Colonel Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information, the UPDF acted on precise intelligence to intercept the suspects, who were found in possession of weapons and suspected explosives.
The operation took place in a quiet residential area near Lake Victoria, with no civilian casualties reported.
“The UPDF remains on heightened alert to ensure the safety of all citizens during the Martyrs Day commemorations,” Colonel Magezi said in a statement.
“We urge the public to remain calm but vigilant and to report any suspicious individuals, objects, or activities to security services immediately.”
The identities of the terrorists have not been disclosed, pending further investigation. Security forces have cordoned off the area, and a bomb disposal unit is examining materials recovered at the scene.
The operation underscores the UPDF’s ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, particularly during high-profile national events like Martyrs Day, which draws thousands to Namugongo each year.
Local residents expressed relief but heightened caution. “We heard nothing until the soldiers came,” said Esther Nakibuuka, a Munyonyo shopkeeper. “It’s a reminder to stay watchful, even in a place like this.”
Authorities have assured the public that preparations for Martyrs Day will proceed as planned, with enhanced security measures in place across Kampala. The UPDF and police have called for cooperation from citizens to ensure a peaceful celebration.
