Police in Ntoroko District are investigating a murder-suicide involving a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier who shot and killed a woman before taking his own life following a domestic dispute in Nyabusokoma Cell, Karugutu Town Council.
The Ntoroko District Police Commander, SP Hassan Mugerwa, confirmed the incident and identified the soldier as Grace Waswa.
The deceased has been identified as Evelyn Kamuli, aged 30, and a resident of Rwebisengo Town Council in Ntoroko District.
According to Preliminary police investigations, Kamuli was an employee at a shop owned by the soldier’s alleged lover.
The soldier reportedly went to the premises to demand money he had invested in the business after their relationship deteriorated.
However, upon his arrival, the business owner had gone to visit her mother, who was admitted to the hospital, leaving Kamuli in charge.
Eyewitnesses say a confrontation ensued, during which the soldier shot Kamuli dead before turning the gun on himself.
Rafael Muheka, the Local Council Chairperson of Karugutu Town Council, called on residents to maintain good relations with security personnel and to resolve domestic and financial disputes peacefully.
SP Mugerwa condemned the act and revealed that investigations have been launched to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem.
