Retired United States Army Lieutenant General Michael Thomas Flynn has delivered a leadership lecture to senior officers of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

The session brought together commandants from the National Defence College – Uganda, the Senior Command and Staff College Kimaka, directing staff, and members of the Joint Staff Headquarters.

In his presentation, Lt Gen Flynn emphasized that effective leadership goes beyond rank and authority. He noted that true leadership is rooted in character, courage, strategic vision, and the ability to inspire others toward a shared purpose.

During his visit to Uganda, Flynn also held engagements with the Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Speaking on behalf of the officers, Brigadier General Alex Olupot, Commandant of the National Defence College – Uganda, expressed appreciation for the lecture and the insights drawn from Flynn’s extensive military career.“These lessons resonate deeply with us as officers entrusted with safeguarding our nation and contributing to regional and international peace and stability,” he said.

He added that the lecture reinforced key values such as patriotism, Pan-Africanism, and international cooperation—principles central to the ideological outlook of UPDF officers.

Lt Gen Flynn served for over three decades in the United States Army, including as Director of the Defence Intelligence Agency (2012–2014), and later as National Security Adviser under U.S. President Donald Trump.
